The Young Achievers Trust is searching for six enthusiastic and motivated young people aged 18 to 25 to join our Board of Trustees.

The Trust delivers the annual Young Achievers Awards, a unique programme that recognises the achievements of exceptional young volunteers, activists and social entrepreneurs.

As well as celebrating their achievements, we offer 56 winners a year of exciting support and development opportunities, enabling them to realise their passions and make an even greater impact in their communities.

The Board of Trustees leads the charity, setting our strategic aims and ensuring the organising is well managed. As we operate without staff, each trustee takes a lead on a specific area of the Trust's work.

No particular experience or knowledge is required, just a commitment of 8 to 10 hours of volunteering each month. These roles are great fun, offer the opportunity to learn about how charities work and a brilliant opportunity to make a real impact.

Artic Adventure of a lifetime

Gap-year students with a lust for adventure and a passion for environmental science are urged to apply for the last few places for The British Schools Exploring Society’s Extreme Arctic expedition to Svalbard this spring.

Gap-year students with a lust for adventure and a passion for environmental science are urged to apply for the last few places for The British Schools Exploring Society’s Extreme Arctic expedition to Svalbard this spring.

Due to unprecedented demand, places are filling quickly and the application deadline has been brought forward to Monday 2nd November 2009.

Svalbard, a far-flung snowy archipelago on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, is just 600 miles from the North Pole. At 78 degrees north, the average temperature on arrival in April is -20C, with the islands already experiencing 24 hour daylight.

Living in tents and snow caves in sub-zero temperatures, the young explorers will be taught how to survive in the extreme cold before venturing further afield as weather improves, allowing access to unspoiled landscapes as far as the eye can see. Mountaineering, cross-country skiing and travelling with pulks across the mountain tops, valleys, and tundra, the team will experience the vast expanse of astounding natural beauty, with the freedom, under the guidance of world-class leaders, to explore wherever they choose.

The young explorers will also be working alongside highly qualified scientists to conduct glacial geomorphology and phenology studies, contributing to long-term projects concerning the measurement of key indicators of climate change. In addition, an ornithological survey will also be undertaken, gathering and collating data on some of the indigenous species.

Those taking part will have to be physically fit, enthusiastic and resourceful in order to comfortably live under canvas for the duration of the expedition and to bear the mental and physical hardships of such an adventure. The young explorers will benefit from contact with highly experienced volunteer leaders from the fields of education, industry, medicine and the armed forces, who will ensure that the expedition works to a professional standard so that ambitious scientific and adventurous training objectives can be safely undertaken.

Any young people inspired by this opportunity, brave enough to take on the challenge and keen to experience the adventure of a lifetime should visit the website for more details.

Penguin Books teen book and music editors wanted

Calling all creative whizzes, book heads, musos and budding writers. We are recruiting a team of 13-18 year olds to become the next line up of music and books editors for Penguin’s online community, www.Spinebreakers.co.uk, run by teens for teens.

Calling all creative whizzes, book heads, musos and budding writers. We are recruiting a team of 13-18 year olds to become the next line up of music and books editors for Penguin’s online community, www.Spinebreakers.co.uk, run by teens for teens.

Spinebreakers launched in 2007 and is now crammed full of creative content inspired by books, contributed by 13-18 year olds. The website is backed by publisher Penguin but the content of the site is totally in the hands of the young editors.

The past editors have had brilliant experiences interviewing famous authors like Nick Hornby, being the first to hear and review brand new music from Island records, sitting on the first ever Orange Prize for Fiction Youth Panel, attending the Underage Festival, speaking at events, and letting the world know their opinions when it came to books. We are now looking to recruit a second generation of editors: this is your chance to fill their footsteps, gain some amazing experiences and be a part of something unique.

You will:
- Receive tonnes of free books
- Get to listen and review some of the hottest new music around
- Work with industry professionals
- Meet and interview famous authors and musicians
- Explore imaginative topics around books and writing
- Unleash your creativity
- Get something totally amazing on your CV
- Have all travel expenses covered

“I have to say my involvement with Spinebreakers has helped me a great deal, not only it's given me the confidence to stand out within a crowd, public speaking, writing articles, but it has also given me the opportunity to be on BBC Radio 4, which I'm really proud of.” Osman Diallo (ex-Spinebreakers Editor, aged 20)

If you have a passion for books, music, reading, writing, drawing, filming – anything creative – then we want to hear from you.

The editors will receive a half-day workshop at a youth marketing agency in London. You need to be:
- Available on 26th October 2009
- Within commuting distance of London (for Books Editors only)
- Able to attend monthly meetings at Penguin in Central London
- Able to commit to creating monthly content

To apply, we want you to show us what you can do. Send us your favourite piece of writing you’ve done – it could be a short story, book or album review, rant or feature. Plus we want you to tell us in 100 words or less why you should become one of our teen editors. And, don’t forget to state if you’d rather be a books or music editor. Send the info to: jointheteam@spinebreakers.co.uk

Please send your submissions to reach us no later than 22nd OCTOBER 2009

Please visit www.spinebreakers.co.uk to find out more about the site and to apply to become an editor. jointheteam@spinebreakers.co.uk

Can’t wait to hear from you!

In spite of the many changes to policing in Northern Ireland following the Patten Commission Report in 1999, the policing of Northern Ireland remains for some a controversial issue.

Public Achievement is working with Achieve Enterprises to gather the views and experiences of young people from across Northern Ireland about policing and the rights of young people.

They have already made a short film and are currently working on a longer production, outlining the views and experiences of young people. A report will be presented to the Northern Ireland Policing Board, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, the Police Ombudsman's office, and to members of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

As part of that research they are asking young people to complete a survey, which is an update of research the ICR did in 2003, and will give them a stronger sense of how young people feel about the key issues.

You even have the chance to win one of the new iPod Nanos - now with a built in video camera!

All the information submitted in the survey is confidential. Please read the competition rules before entering.

Are you disabled? About to start university for the first time? if so, we want to hear from you.

The BBC's disability website 'Ouch!' is planning a feature called Disabled Student Diaries. We want to follow 3 disabled students in their first few weeks at university, focusing on everything from access to lectures and campus, through to how you're getting on living independently away from home and your new social life.

We will expect our chosen students to write a diary for us for the first 4 weeks at uni plus some other 'stuff' including a little filming before you go to uni and a lovely care package the contents of which are secret - sssh.

We're keen to work with you so we don't disrupt your life too much at this crucial time. We will be offering some payment as well as other potentially interesting opportunities.
How do I get involved?

Email us now, and tell us a bit about you.
