About us
We Need Young People is a directory of opportunities for young people to get involved. The idea is to collate those surveys, debates, competitions, media requests and pretty much anything where a young person is required into a central place that can then be searched and distributed as required.
Will it work?
Good question. This is very much a proof of concept, to see whether it'll actually work. It's a bit of a chicken and egg, people will only add opportunities if other people are looking for those opportunities, but people will only look for opportunities if there are opportunities to look for. Let's see what happens.
Who's behind it?
It was created by Oliver Benson, partly in response to an idea and partly to develop his database and web interface skills. When he is not building useful database-driven websites in his spare time, Oliver works for online communications charity YouthNet, responsible for Do-it, a useful database-driven website listing volunteering opportunities (although it's worth saying he doesn't get anywhere near the code at work).
How is it funded?
Erm... Olly's hard-earned cash.
Can I use the opportunities listed on my site?
Yes, very much so. Part of the original idea was to make the opportunities be available to be used by other people in their own ways on their own websites etc. See the information on Feeds for ways to access the database directly.
Can I link to this site?
Are you foolish? Of course you can. We want as many people using this site as possible.
Where do the opportunities come from?
A variety of sources. I'd hope nobody thinks I am ripping them off if I've copied from them, but then the very nature of these opportunities is to make them available to as many people as possible I can't really see it being an issue.
I'd like to add an opportunity
The easiest way to do this is by clicking on the add button at the top of the page and typing in your opportunity detail there. If you have multiple opportunities, or you'll regularly be adding them (or you'd like to help by adding other opportunities) then please contact me and I'll give you your own password.
I'm a TV producer and I'm really desperate for a 17-year-old left-handed karate expert who speaks Polish and lives within one mile of a river. And I need them in 26 minutes time.
Erm, no. The very nature of this site is you'll need a long lead-in time, particularly if you are looking for something specialised like the above (and yes, those kind of requests are not unheard of). If you need someone urgently, try Ask A Charity.
Who owns the copyright for the site?
The concept, coding and graphics are copyright Oliver Benson. The front page image is courtesy of missyt, and used under licence.
